Panchakarma literally means ‘Five Actions’. It is well-suited given the fact that this technique relies upon five distinctive basic activities that control the body namely Vaman, Virechan, Vasti, Nasya and Raktamokshan respectively. Panchkarma is detoxification process of whole body. When we can't properly digest our food, experiences, and feelings, toxins aggregate in our bodily tissues, causing imbalance and eventually making us sick. Panchakarma is an exquisite purging procedure that discharges stored toxins and re-establishes the body's natural healing ability. Sometimes we use only special therapy, as per needs of illness.
Expulsion of aggravated doshas from the mouth region or the oral canal is called Vaman karma. It should not be compared with vomiting. Vaman karma is performed after sequence of procedures under the supervision of Panchkarma procedure expert and is done according to condition of the patients.
The Virachana therapy is medicated purification therapy, cleansing the body from excess pitta accumulation, purifying blood and clearing toxins. The therapy primarily concentrates on the toxins accumulated in the liver and gall bladder, thus cleansing the gastro-intestinal tract completely. It is effective Treatment for Piles, Constipation, Acidity, Ulcers, Liver/Spleen diseases, Jaundice, Inflammations.
Vasti is a therapeutic treatment aiming to cleanse, nourish, and rejuvenate the body. Vasti is a Sanskrit word meaning 'bladder' or 'bag'. This therapy involves the introduction of herbal decoctions, oils, or other medicated substances into the rectum or other body cavities for healing purposes. Vasti works to treat Vata at its source. It accomplishes this with the administration of an herbal concoction into the target area of the colon.
There are some other Vasti treatments like Kati Vasti, Shiro Vasti, Janu Vasti, Uro Vasti, and Greeva Vasti. These are not full-fledged Vasti treatments. They are named so because they require medicated herbal concoctions to stay on the patient over an extended period of time.
Nasya
treatment refers to an Ayurvedic therapy that includes instillation of herbal oils, juices, or powders through the nasal route. It works specifically on disorders of the ear, nose, and throat. Nasya is one among the five Panchakarma therapies. It is especially desirable for diseases of parts above the base of the neck; the nasal passage being the gateway of the head. It works for strengthening the nasal passages, treats allergies and sinusitis, clears mucus blockages, opens blocked channels, and treats nasal congestions.
This treatment is useful for cleaning blood and is effective against ailments caused because of impure blood. It can be done in a particular area or for the whole body. This treatment is especially valuable in different skin infections, such as psoriasis, dermatitis, and furthermore in local lesions such as abscesses and pigmentation.
Raktamokshan Therapy includes Pracchanna (incision) in which a vein or artery is punctured or incised to let out the impure blood. It can be done using a surgical knife or a specialized instrument. Sira Vyadha (venesection) involves making small incisions in veins to allow the impure blood to flow out. In Jalauka (leech therapy), leeches are applied to the affected area, which sucks out the impure blood. Additionally, leech saliva contains bioactive compounds that have therapeutic effects. In Alabu (cupping therapy), cups are placed on the skin, creating a vacuum that draws out the impure blood.
